Holland’s fruit garden
The Betuwe has many orchards and fruit shops, so it is rightfully called Holland’s fruit garden. It is most beautiful during the springtime, when the fruit trees are blossoming. The Betuwe is known for its blossoming fruit trees and during this period the area is covered under a white/pink-blanket.
Street Tree Centre Betuwe
The village Opheusden is known for its large breeding stations for street trees. Street trees are trees one mainly plants alongside lanes, roads and streets. Examples of this kind of tree are the oak, beech and plane-tree. Opheusden prides itself on being Europe’s largest street tree centre. The breeders possess grounds all around Opheusden.
River landscape
In the Betuwe you may find a beautifully kept rural area. The dykes, water meadows, shipping industry and changing water levels give this unique river landscape a very intimate atmosphere. Down the middle of the Betuwe the river Linge (i.e. ‘the Long’ river) winds its way through picturesque villages. This provides the ideal circumstances for a varied canoe trip or a tour across the waters.
Characteristic
In the characteristic river landscape there are magnificent places that are really worth a visit.
A cycling trip or a walking tour westward across the Rijnbandijk takes you, among other things, past Fort De Spees. Beautiful views on Utrecht’s Heuvelrug (Ridge) and natural landscape De Blauwe Kamer (The Blue Room) on the other side of the Rhine make a trip even more worthwhile.
